Personal vs Merchant Wallet Account for an Online Shop in Bangladesh

A personal wallet is an ordinary account you open for your own use. A merchant account is a business account that a wallet provider gives to a business, usually with an official way to connect your website. Personal numbers are quick to start but need manual or SMS-based checking. Merchant accounts take more setup but can connect to your store through an official API. Ask your provider for the current terms before you choose.

What is a personal wallet account?

It is the account most people have: you register with your phone number and identity details, and you send and receive money with it. A shop that uses one shares the number with customers, who use Send Money to pay. Nothing special is needed to start, which is why small sellers on Facebook and WhatsApp often begin here.

The weak points are practical. There is no built-in link between a payment and an order, so you confirm each payment by looking at your SMS or app. And the provider's terms may not allow, or may limit, business use of a personal account.

What is a merchant account?

A merchant account is set up for a business that takes payments. Providers generally offer a way for a website to start a payment and be told the result, often called a payment gateway or merchant API. That lets the store confirm orders without anyone reading messages. What a provider asks for before it opens one, how long it takes and what it costs differ by provider and change over time, so do not rely on what you heard from other sellers.

What changes for your customers

Customers care about one thing: paying without trouble and knowing the order went through. With a personal number, they send money, copy a code or type a reference, and wait until you confirm. With a merchant integration, the website usually guides them and the confirmation can come back to the site by itself. In both cases, show the exact amount and the account they should pay, and tell them what to do if the page does not update. A clear payment page lowers the number of 'did you get my payment?' messages, whichever account type you use.

Trust matters too. Customers hesitate to send money to an unfamiliar personal number. A named shop, a visible order number and a quick reply help, whatever the account type.

When each option makes sense

Where SMS confirmation fits, and where it does not

If you do use a personal number, you can automate the checking. QRPayBD reads the payment-received SMS on your shop's Android phone with a free Collector app, matches it to an order using the order reference or the TrxID, and marks the order paid. It never holds or moves money and does not log in to your wallet. This is useful for the shops that are in the personal-number column of the table.

Where it does not fit: if you already have official merchant API credentials, use them. An official API confirms payments inside the wallet system, which is stronger than reading a message. QRPayBD is not an official wallet API, and SMS can be delayed, missed, reworded or forged, so for large payments you should also check your balance in the wallet app.

On providers: the message readers for bKash, Nagad and Upay have been verified on real payments. Rocket and banks are planned. Support for official merchant APIs is planned, not available. QRPayBD is not affiliated with any wallet provider or bank.
